Like, at all. 45 minutes of unconsciousness in a night is a great fucking success, and half the time, even that happens in several pieces over the course of several hours. Losing his mind is on the very short list of ways things can go next.
Then, he has a brilliant idea, but until he gives it a try, he doesn't know how brilliant it is.

Tony is surprised he's a Guide, considered property, outed after Steve sends him to help a Sentinel in distress. Tony's sent to a brutal "training" program to get him ready to be assigned a Sentinel. Although he gets assigned to the Sentinel Pepper and Steve interviewed and approved, he's broken from what is really torture. It doesn't help the liason to SHIELD is a petty G-Tac man, expecting to be able to control Tony. Tony slowly recovers, and the G-Tac liason is shot down during a meeting with the team and Fury. Disturbing description of torture at the beginning.
