Summary
Satoru doesn't survive the fight with Fushiguro Toji. He dies, cold and alone, leaving behind only a curse with a taste for carnage. Suguru brings that curse to his lips, swallows down the remains of his best friend, his one and only. He doesn't know if it's Satoru's soul or just a mindless curse he's ingesting, but still, he can't part with it.

Redoing this because I don't know what I was on to make the last bookmark so weak. I cannot express how much of my life this fic has consumed. I was rereading it the other day on the way to class and listening to Muse's Stockholm Syndrome and I've not been the same since. I wish I was a better artist to do what I'm seeing in my head and what I'm reading written justice because it's a really good combination. This fic is my holy roman empire. This one is something special, it's short and sweet but it achieves a lot in that time. This AU doesn't change much but what it does change is so impactful and the way they're written here is just. Such a delight to read. Recommending this one if you're remotely into STSG, this one absolutely does them justice.

“Satoru?” The word rings, fuzzy in his ears as it whines like tinnitus, familiar and heart stopping.
‘I’m dead.’ He can’t even hear his own thoughts over the loudness of the world, staggering where he stands, eyes still fixated on the sky, on the sun. ‘I’m dead, I died, I felt my heart stop, this can’t be, it can’t-’
“Hey,” it comes again, a little more urgent than before, a little closer, another hammer to his ears and all the noise shrieking behind his eyes. He recoils hard enough to go stumbling as a hand reaches for him, covered in flesh rather than empty bone, tan and recognizable. Unbelievable.
There’s something wet trickling from his nose. Bile stings on the back of his tongue. The words dissolve into the rest of the white noise as he stares up at the blue of the sky, and tries to remember if he’d ever had a hallucination as bright as this.
‘I have to be dead,’ he thinks. Somehow, he isn’t.
Or: Gojo Satoru goes back in time. He makes a couple of changes for the better.

Absolutely nobody is surprised I bookmarked this. Where to begin, beautifully written, emotional, enough whump to satisfy but not so much that it feels oppressive, and healthy doses of everything else. I really really recommend the shit out of this. Absolutely a crown jewel of the JJK fandom on AO3.

Slowly, smile still plastic on his face, Suguru faces Satoru. This fucking dumbass. “Satoru,” he says, dangerous edge to his voice, “what did you do?”
Satoru makes some bastardization of a sound, half between a laugh and a cough. “...Whoops?”
“I,” Suguru grits, pinching two fingers together, “am this close to mass murder.” He’s joking. Probably.
///OR: Shortly before Getō would have massacred a village, he and Gojō are thrust eleven years forward into a would-have-been future that Getō is conspicuously absent from.

Amazing read, top of the stsg bookmarks for a reason. Absolutely deserves to be up there. Characterisation is bang on, and, beyond some minor typos, really well written. I'm gonna enjoy rereading this one in the future. Excellent stuff.
