Shang Qinghua, an injured and hungry merman, is found by Cang Qiong Marine Research and taken in to be treated and healed.
It just so happens that he's just what they need to begin their merfolk breeding program; and they've got quite a list of mates to pair him up with for their research- after all, Shang Qinghua's species is known to be able to breed with nearly any species of merfolk there is.
(Or, the one where merman Shang Qinghua will be bred for the sake of dubious science, whether he wants to or not.)
