    England in 1313 stands on the brink of disaster. Within two years, unbroken rains will rot the grain in the fields, disease and starvation will strike men and beasts, and famine will stalk the land.

    Into this waning season of calm, a modern family appears, cast without explanation into medieval Yorkshire. Unable to speak the language and blind to the customs that govern every acre and every soul, they secure the farm of a near-abandoned Crown manor along the River Aire—an estate laid waste by hardship and raids.

    Here they must learn to plough, tithe, bargain, worship, and rule according to the ancient customs of the realm. They must win the trust of villeins and reeves, evade the notice of barons and clerks, and build a life in a world so foreign it might as well be another planet.

    Their knowledge of medicine, farming, order, and craft places power in their hands—dangerous power, if seen by the wrong eyes. Yet it may be the only thing that stands between their children and starvation.

    For the rains are coming.
    And time, in this new world, runs swiftly.
