There was a second, John thinks, when he knew the elastic was going to snap, right before it actually did. His eyes had been closed, he remembers, and his muscles tensed for the impact of the rubber on his hand. Right before the slingshot broke. Right before. Right before.
Right before he snaps, John knows something is about to happen too.
His vision falters. His hearing grows distant. His stomach swoops, and the world tilts.
And then he's on the ground.

Summary
When he doesn’t hear Chris immediately respond, he knows something is wrong. He looks down at the kid at his side, but he’s looking behind them.
“What’s wr—” His own question dies on his lips as he glances back.
It’s the fucking clown, and he’s standing at the edge of the property on the curb.
Buck can still remember a couple of years back when there were stories across the country about people dressed as clowns, running around and scaring people. Most of the clowns were innocent— as innocent as someone with the sole intent of scaring someone half to death could be, at least— but some weren’t. Some were assholes that took the opportunity of anonymity to hurt people.
It's only Buck's luck that he would encounter one of them.

Summary
Peter Benton has been avoiding Carter for over a week. Refuses to speak to him. Refuses to even look at him. All because of the Vicodin. The Vicodin that Carter threw up. It wasn't even a real relapse.
Benton doesn't seem to care.
A chance meeting during Carter's paramedic ride-along gives John the opportunity to finally confront Peter.
But before the two can work out their differences, they are ambushed by a trio of violent drug-seekers, looking to score from the ambulance's stash.
It all goes wrong.
And Peter Benton may never have another chance to make things right with his former student.

Summary
The story of how John Carter ended up in soft restraints in the neurology step-down unit at County General Hospital is, if you ask him, the story of a gross overreaction on the part of his teacher, Peter Benton.
If you ask Benton… the restraints were a completely necessary medical intervention made on behalf of a severely concussed and extremely dizzy idiot.
OR: After getting attacked in the ER, Carter has a severe concussion and refuses to stay in bed.
