Summary
The first time Evangeline saw herself in a dress, one of Alice’s bras underneath stuffed to the brim with paper to fill out her chest, she cried. In eighteen years of living she had never looked in the mirror and been this happy with what looked back at her, and she didn’t know what to do other than to cry and throw herself into Alice’s arms. Alice held her close, running her fingers through her hair and kissing the top of her head, and Evangeline couldn’t imagine how this day could go better than this.
And then, the door opened.
“Hey, is Alice—” Alex, one of Evangeline’s dads, paused in the doorway. He took in the sight of his child and their best friend standing there, Evangeline in a dress, and Evangeline wished she could just vanish into thin air.

For as long as he can possibly remember, Alex has hurt.
He wakes up to a pinching in between his shoulder blades. He rolls off of his shoulder, shaking out the numbness in his fingertips as he lays on his back. On the ceiling, Alex finds figures in the popcorn texturing to distract himself. He finds as many as he can until he’s distracted enough that the pain becomes just another part of him.

Arthur didn't respond. Slowly, he turned his head to face the other side of the street.
His eyes, though unseeing, burned bright as they gazed across the road. Noel followed his direction over the asphalt to find what had caught his attention.
There, standing just in front of a shop front, a family stood all together: a father, a mother, and between them— just barely reaching their knees— a little girl.
