"Andrew felt an ache in his chest at the difference between the Neil Josten he had known and the man standing in front of him. Neil Josten had had a light in his eyes, an excitement and a joy for a game he had sacrificed everything for. Though he had been skittish, and blunt, and sometimes idiotic, he had also had a vigor for life Andrew had never seen before.
The man standing in front of him was cold, calculating, pragmatic. He didn’t do silly, human little things like dream. Where Andrew had become human in the ten years since they had last seen each other, it was as if Neil Josten had done the opposite - chipped away at the pesky shreds of humanity he had left until there was nothing but a blank kind of darkness. It was as if he had ripped away his soul."
(An AU where Stuart does manage to kill Nathan in time, but Neil is whisked off to train as the next Butcher instead of continuing as an exy player. Andrew knows Neil is alive, but is told he just has to move on and forget about the auburn-haired pipe dream that understood him better than anyone else. And he tries to. Oh, how he tries...)

"Nathaniel turned his head and began saying something to Natalie, but the second man moved, suddenly. He grabbed the knife from Nathaniel’s hand and sunk it deep into his shoulder.
Andrew’s heart stopped in the few moments he watched his partner get pinned to the brick wall behind them, seeing blood spreading over the fabric of the shirt he was wearing.
Nathaniel’s facial expression didn’t twitch. His eyes were cold, calculating, his jaw set against the pain. He seemed to breathe out before wrapping his fingers around the man’s wrist, pushing down on the pressure points in his arm, and managing to release his grip on the knife. Nathaniel then managed to rip the blade from his flesh and cleanly slit across the attacker’s throat."

"Aaron’s jaw dropped at the same time he heard Katelyn gasp. He was sure he was hallucinating. Or maybe he was back on drugs. Because the man who stepped up to their table looked absolutely identical to Aaron.
He had the same straight, blond hair. He had the same hazel eyes with gold flecks, though his looked completely apathetic. He had an eyebrow slit and black gouges in his ears. He appeared to have the same abundance of tattoos Neil did, some lining his biceps, while others crawled up his neck.
He was also absolutely ripped, with bulging biceps and broader shoulders than Aaron’s could ever be. He had a tight, black, short-sleeved turtleneck on, along with a pair of light wash, ripped jeans. He was wearing black armbands that covered pretty much his entire forearms too, which were embroidered with colorful flowers and bumble bees.
Okay, so maybe not exactly the same. But he was similar enough to obviously be Aaron’s twin."

He stares, evaluates the danger, tensing momentarily, eyes flicking to the nearest door and then back to Andrew. Then he blinks, considering, and relaxes deliberately, like he has taken in all that Andrew is and has come to the conclusion that he is not a threat. Andrew feels his hackles rising. Andrew had been a threat long before he became Andrew.
