The war's a lot easier to win when your biggest enemies are on your side from the beginning.

—RumiUrsa failed to save her son. Barely an hour old, Zuko had already said his farewell to the Mortal World.
However, it’s not a permanent farewell, because it was fate in the end. Zuko was indeed lucky to be born.
Turned spirit upon dying, the Blue Spirit joins the Avatar in the mortal world in his quest to end a century old war.
aka: ozai is a jerk and kills a newborn zuko. zuko in turn becomes a spirit and chops off zhao's sideburns. oh, and he also joins the gaang. i'm pretty sure he does—

Summary
Zuko realizes Ozai is an asshole before his banishment. He starts sneaking out as the Blue Spirit. When he gets banished, he simply continues from aboard the Wani. When the avatar shows up, Zuko chases him, all while the Blue Spirit keeps running into the Gaang. Of course, all of this would be much easier if people realised he wasn't an actual spirit. Wait, what's this about him being an airbender?!?

– and Azula’s crackling bolt of lightning steadied, became still and straight, and was a beam of blue light thrusting from the horizon to the sky. The cold voltaic shock through his nerves was the sting of cold air damp with spray from the sea, the pressure of electrical charge the weight of armour on his shoulders, the harsh blue-white glow of lightning the grey-white-blue of sea and ice and sky.
…His scalp was cold.
Zuko doesn't know why he's suddenly back here again, here on his ship amongst the icebergs, with the Avatar's light stabbing into the sky. He's not even sure this is real. But if it is, he's going to do things better this time.
Of course, things go off the rails almost immediately.
