“Hast a cat?” exclaimed Iäna, delighted. “I worried for a moment thou’d been fighting ghouls again!”
“I –” A twitch of pain across his expression, which he could not help. Putting down ghouls was a hateful, awful task, and the ghoul in Tanvero had very nearly killed him; but the loss of his gift, the ability to destroy a ghoul, was still a raw and open wound. “No, no, needst not worry about that. And I absolutely do not have a cat. I feed the strays that live on the street in the evenings, but they aren’t mine. Except, last night one of them got into my flat somehow, and she won’t leave.”
Iäna’s smile grew to a grin.
“But she is not thy cat?”
“Of course not.”
“Well, othala. An thou’rt the one feeding her and sharing thy home with her, maybe she’s not thy cat, but thou art most certainly her man.”
Celehar huffed, but could not help but soften at the amusement on Iäna’s face.
“It won’t be for long. I’ll get her out tonight, I’m sure.”

Beshelar raised his eyebrows, took a half-step over to glance inside. Half-goblin, he corrected internally, glimpsing to his surprise a teenager not so much older than his Serenity, knelt at the back of the room, murmuring prayers into his hands, Barizheise-style. Fraying workman’s clothes, dark curls, pale eyes shadowed by his bowed head. Unremarkable, for the most part.
