("Of course, sir," Bren answered, immediately sitting in the offered chair. It was higher than he was used to and, even with his considerable height, his feet dangling made him feel like a child. Desperately, he hoped Master Ikithon couldn't see him squirm. "What was it you wanted to speak with me about?"
"Well, as I'm sure you know, you're very bright," started Master Ikithon, almost conspiratorially, his eyes twinkling. Bren ducked his head, embarrassingly pleased by the compliment. "Top of your class, you'll be a credit to our great empire one day."
A credit to the Empire. The words rang through his ears. It was all he had ever wanted, to help people and protect them. That dream seemed so close he could almost taste it, sending shivers of excitement down his back. In spite of himself, Bren glowed with pride. If Master Ikithon, one of the most important people in the whole of the Empire, thought he would make something of himself then he couldn't let him down.)
