Summary
Problems always start out small. This also applies in Bilbo's case.
It all started with a single light in the dark of the night. If Bilbo had known it would end in such a big mess, he would have turned around and not spend another glance on it. But, unfortunately, our ignorant hobbit followed the light, completely unaware of the consequences that it would bring and eventually change his whole life.
OR
After Rivendell, Bilbo wanders off and gets turned into a Dwarf. Chaos ensues.

No, he had definitely not wanted to restart his life from just before it was overturned by dwarves, elves, dragons, skinchangers, and oh, let's not forget dragons and gold-sickness. And that Valar forsaken Ring. This was most definitely not what he had imagined.
And yet, that was exactly what was happening. And he supposed, if it would just let him save his King and said King's nephews, as well as destroy the Ring before Frodo ever had a chance to be burdened with it - then maybe, just maybe, though it wasn't what he had imagined, it was exactly what he needed.Basically a Bilbo-fixes-everything fic, because reasons. It won't be without its bumps in the road, though.

Everything seems to be getting better until the ship he was on crossed-path with EREBOR, an infamous pirate ship with an equally infamous captain and crew.

“No you’re not.”
Even the air seemed to still at Bilbo’s words.
“What did you say?” Thorin asks lowly, eyes darker than they’ve ever been, expression twisted with malice though he has never looked at Bilbo that way before, certainly not recently. A part of Bilbo mourns silently for the potential those looks had held.
“You’re not the king,” Bilbo straightens his shoulders and reaches his hand down into the pocket where the proof is stored, pulling out the brilliant gem and holding it out for all to see. ”…I am.”

Oh yes, taking a Hobbit with a lick of magic is certainly a good thing to do. Sometimes, Bilbo just wants to compress himself against his bed and relax in his isolated home; nope, Gandalf the Grey does not understand the word 'NO!' Now, the hobbit finds himself in the company of vexing dwarrows who tasked themselves with a suicide mission towards a desolated mountain, sans the dragon that currently lays beneath the gold.
Maybe the Hobbit could find himself in the rightful hands after all, if only they knew how to care for themselves and stop treating him like the damsel in distress they describe him as; heroism could bite the hobbit in the butt.
