Summary
It's one of the first things Charles notices about Edwin: he doesn't have a daemon.
While Anita curls around him, protective with teeth bared despite the freezing water drenching her fur, Edwin stands alone.
Charles hadn't thought it was possible to lose your daemon and stay sane, but he also hadn't thought that ghosts were real, so he just sort of accepts it and moves on.
When he finally does gather the courage to ask Edwin about it weeks later, Edwin goes awfully still, a wild, panicked look crossing his eyes for just long enough to make Charles regret saying anything.
Eventually, Edwin does respond, voice low and rough.
"Hell is designed to tear souls apart, Charles," he says, not meeting Charles' eyes. "I'm sure you can deduce the rest."

Carlos quivers as he forces his hand beneath the stream of cold water. It swirls around the basin, ribbons of blood spiraling against ceramic. The wounds are small but deep; a string of ragged holes punched into the back of his hand. He looks into the edge of the mirror, polished silver reflecting the mess of a room behind him.
His soul is crushed into the corner of the bathroom, cowering behind the towel rack. Scarlet fur forced into hackles as one paw is held shaking off the tiles, her brown eyes meeting Carlos’ own. She pants rapidly, jaw slack and painted red.
Water splatters across the floor as Carlos throws a handful into his face, finally letting out a breath.
‘You’ —his fingers tighten around the edge of the sink— ‘are barely my dæmon.’

Ariney releases a chittering sound, blue eyes sparkling. “Guess you’ll have to put your mind to it, then. Otherwise you’ll never keep up with Killua and I!”
That makes Gon stand up straight. The challenge catches Jax’s attention too, turning their despair into something pointed and sharp.
Jax says, “You’re not leaving us behind. I won’t let you.”

A guide to keep track of dæmons and other miscellaneous information in my dæmon au, Hunter x Dæmons!
My dæmon au is based on a book series called ‘His Dark Materials’. In the series, each humans’ soul exists outside of their body in animal shapes and are called dæmons. Dæmons try out all sorts of animal forms as children and choose a forever animal shape once they and their human reach puberty. It’s taboo to touch another person’s dæmon since it’s their soul, if you do touch another’s dæmon it’s usually a) a form of abuse, or b) a show of trust and love, depending on the person doing the touching of course.

Niki could say a lot in response to that quote now fed back to him; that James' own dæmon is some puffed up, squawking budgerigar whose colours are clearly compensatory. 'Centipedes are myriapods,' is what he instead responds with, 'which are not considered part of the insect class.'
It's true; they're not. Nevertheless, it seems to win him no favours.
(For want of a nail: Ani wants James, Birdie wants Niki. You can hardly deny what the soul demands, no matter how long it takes to get there.)
