Even isn’t sure where this is going and he’s already getting uncomfortable, but he decides to go with it because Noora looks miserable, and he tries to make a policy of making people less miserable when he can. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, we got together when we were fifteen and it lasted -- until Isak.”
“And it was shitty. At the end, I mean.” She looks at him now, and there’s a sort of desperateness in her eyes that he’s never seen in her before.
Even sucks in his lip. “I mean, it had been shitty for a really long time. It’s a long story.”
Noora makes a small sound that’s almost a snort, but there’s nothing cruel in it. “I have a long story, too.”

“Yeah,” said Cassie softly. The silence knit itself back over her. A light breeze rustled the grass. I could hear the scritching buzz of insects and the soft gravelly sound of Cassie’s own breath. She uncurled herself into the pine-needled ground again, dropping her hands back onto her belly. And then her voice drifted up again from the forest floor.“I’m doing everything right, Tobias.”
I adjusted myself on my branch and peered at her. After a while, maybe a few seconds or a minute, she elaborated.
“I’m sober again. I have a girlfriend, sort of, maybe. I have friends. I meditate, I get exercise, I have a job that I care about. I try to eat dinner with my parents once a week, and when I have to cancel I call and apologize. I’m doing—everything I’m supposed to do. ‘Reintegrating.’” She kept her gaze pointed at the center of the sky. "It's not working."

He didn’t dare attempt to find James, worrying what else may befall his troubled mind if his eyes crept their way along James’ face once again that night. He also desperately tried to avoid Meredith, but she snuck her way into his mind and filled it with ugly, hot flashes of guilt.
He got blackout drunk before James could keep her company in his mind.
Or: Oliver ends up having a nice little chat with Alexander and Colin after the Romeo and Juliet performance in regard to his strange feelings about James. They help him realize that, maybe, his feelings aren't 100% platonic.
