To Maria, the answer was simple: far enough. She will CLAIM this second chance, protect Shadow from vile monsters, defend Grandpa from terrible things, save the ARK, and make it happily to the Earth!
To Gerald, the answer was complex: anything for his little ones. However, the line to play between what he had to do to protect from the machinations of G.U.N. was opposite of what his precious granddaughter would want.

It was too easy to mourn the temporary loss of friendship and company he’d gotten used to in the past few months. To find himself grow more and more restless with every grunt of “-no, you can’t see Maria-” he received throughout the next two days.
Though occasionally the response came with an explanation tacked on, one in regards to a “flew” mentioned like it was meant to give him a sense of comfort.
It really only served to confuse and irritate Shadow further. To his knowledge, humans couldn’t fly. Unless they were in a movie, he supposed, but Maria wasn’t in some type of movie.
A short puff of air escapes between grit teeth. It’s frustrating.
And it’s even more frustrating that he’s gotten this upset over it.
It's been three days since Shadow's seen Maria and it doesn't take a genius to notice how much it's been taking a toll on him. But whereas Shadow expected secrets about why he couldn't see her, he's faced with only one explanation.
Maria has the "flew". Which is weird. Humans aren't supposed to fly.

Shadow couldn't say he was used to having unanswered questions.
While he might not be the most popular creature in the research facility, the scientists had always seemed more than keen to provide him with whatever information he asked of them, petty or not.
It was...odd to finally have a question he hadn't received an answer to for days. Not for a lack of an actual answer from the facility's scientists, but from a lack of Shadow asking it in the first place.
He always found his stomach began to twist itself into knots whenever his lips began to form around the words. A feeling that be accompanied by both embarrassment and shame.
It was a simple question, why was it so hard to ask?
