We are going to explore that here since Sonic prime didn't really do so and see what this variant of Sonic could be like.

Somewhere in 2017, Sonic Forces was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. And then, one Thursday, nearly five years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a hedgehog resting against a tree somewhere on Mobius suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong with the series all this time, and he finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.
Sadly, however, before he could reach his friends to tell anyone about it, a terrible, stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever.

Summary
Sonic and Shadow are a pair of unlikely friends that manage to perfectly contrast each other. Shadow is aloof, neurotic, and seems to distrust the world around him, due to being reviled and hated by the general populace. Sonic is a friendly, overemphatic hedgehog who wears his heart on his sleeve, crying at every misfortune that befalls anyone, giving him the mocking nickname "Pansy". Despite their major differences, they manage to protect each other and survive among a human-dominated world, one that is already unwelcoming enough to creatures like them. Worst of all, it begins to become impossible to tell who they could really trust, Shadow's theory of demonic possessions apparently becoming true. Any creature they meet in the streets could be a potential demon, the world turning their back on a dying God.
Attempting to stitch what remained of the world together, Shadow makes Sonic into a hybrid of demon and hedgehog, an eldritch being of incredible strength. In a final bid to save humanity, everyone involved in their tragic lives question what they're willing to really sacrifice to solidify society once again.
