He’s my friend.
Steve didn’t know what else to say. Bucky, his friend, was not okay. Well, that was obvious, and he felt stupid for pointing it out, but he didn’t have a better word for what was going on. Everything just wasn’t okay. He had gone back under ice just a few minutes ago and Steve was sitting in the room over, head in his hands, feeling completely useless. He couldn’t help Bucky, he knew that. There was nothing he could do to undo all of Hydra’s brainwashing, all of Bucky’s meticulously wiped and reprogrammed memories were untouchable for Steve. All he could do was take care of him, so he did.

But he can’t. The arm is a tool, a weapon. Something attached to him, something he can use, but not, ultimately, his. He knows better than anyone what that arm makes him capable of, the threat that it poses to everyone around him, and it scares him.
It shouldn’t make him hard to feel Steve touch it, or think about Steve kissing it, or fucking his mouth on its fingers – when so very few other things do. And yet…- - -

He'll really give the media something to talk about. Fuck it. He'll give Steve something more to blush and stutter over, his eyes going in and out of focus, and his cheeks getting hot the next time he's in an interview and the shape of his body comes up. While in physical therapy, he meets a stunning blond volunteer therapist named Steven Rogers. They become close friends while Bucky is in physical therapy. Even after the Brunet's mandated physical therapy is over, they stay friends. As they continue to grow closer, Bucky finds himself growing feelings for the other, feelings he doesn't understand, but pushes them away until he finds a key detail about the Blonde, that he had been hiding. When it comes time for Bucky to redeploy, he finds every way possible not to go back yet, trying to deal with his feelings for the other. Steve pushes him away, not wanting to get used. Bucky must convince Steve he actually wants him.
