He had always felt oddly out of place with all of them though, despite how much they all insisted he belonged, since he didn't fit in with their whole "we're all traumatized to shit" group thing they all had in common.

When Eiji wakes up, Ash is turned into a kid??? 11 years old, to be exact. He seems to have lost his memories too. Ash is just a child, and waking up in a strange place with a strange man isn't a very good place to start. He thinks that Eiji must be one of his clients who wants to hurt him again.
So, as Eiji and Shorter (and others) work to gain Ash's trust and take care of him, they give him the childhood that he truly deserved.
