Summary
Ponder is generally smart but even he makes mistakes. The mistake in question made the whole rest of the faculty jealous. Rincewind soon finds himself unwillingly thrust into another series of events to, in a very roundabout way, pay for that mistake.
What should have been a quick trip to Klatch and back to UU instead turns into a series of events that resemble an adventure a little too closely for Rincewind’s tastes.

Dr. Rjincewand, 33, bachelor, born in Sweden and raised in New Jersey, specialist for the process of waste oxidation in certain nuclear reactors and his new pal Jack Zweiblumen - a tourist he met at the airport and sat next to on the plane - go on a little 'adventure'. The adventure being a cross-country roadtrip across the US, which ultimately leads to Rjincewand's goal for the trip - though he seems as if he doesn't want to reach it.
