"Hikaru–" He slips again; his heart races with a rancid, treacherous twist.

Hikaru closes the gap. He grabs Yoshiki’s collar–the collar of his own borrowed jacket–and pulls him in.

“Pretending to be one.” He echoed, drafting an appropriate response meant to de-escalate. Yoshiki jerked back, one fear ridden step followed by another until he was cornered against a wall.
“Do I frighten you?” It was then that Hikaru acknowledged the shift in the air—a tang of adrenaline with the lingering scent of arousal. Yoshiki stiffened beneath his cold touch, body going impossibly taut. Confirmed. He had frightened Yoshiki.
“You're scaring me.”
Oh. How lovely a feeling this was.

As a pseudo-writer, I am quite incapable of creating anything original, so this very short story will be a cliché.
There are a couple of truly masterful stories, based on ¤▪︎Hikaru ga shinda natsu▪︎¤ here, and now, with season 2 of the anime confirmed - I hope there will be even more.
Beyond the horror tale, and the unspeakable opportunities of freaky smut, there is a universe of psychological aspects of human reaction/interaction that I'd prefer to dip my fingers into. As always.
Still, content is mature. 光が死んだ夏 is still considered to belong in the horror genre.
I forever recommend the original manga - it's exceptional.
~Otherwise:
That one hot summer, when Hikaru died, a monster and a boy get stuck in an elevator for a while. No humans are harmed in the process, and also - no monsters, but some kissing happens, and some profound soul-searching.
Dealing with loss is hard for Yoshiki, but dealing with loss AND gain at the exact same moment is nigh crushing.

Summary
Hikaru doesn't die from that head injury on the mountain and recovers. After graduating high school he and Yoshiki go to the same college in Tokyo. Yoshiki has been painfully in love with Hikaru for most of their lives and still hasn't come to terms with his own sexuality and chooses to assume he and Hikaru will never happen, but doesn't want to be with anyone else.
Little does he know, Hikaru has also been struggling with his own sexual identity and only recently realized that the feelings he has had for Yoshiki all this time were romantic and that he had been looking for Yoshiki in girls who have always disappointed him. Hikaru soon figures out that his suspicions about Yoshiki were true, and slowly tries to bring Yoshiki out of his shell now that they were out of their small conservative town. But he soon realizes that it will take a lot more time and effort than he thought to undo the social programming they had both been put under for their entire lives. But Hikaru is confident that he can help Yoshiki by first helping himself since he had always been the more brave and secure of the two. -
