Lan Xichen has fallen sick after entering seclusion. No one knows what is wrong with him, except that his core is killing him. No one in the Cloud Recesses can help, so Wei Wuxian sets out to track down what remains of Wen Qing's writings in the hope that the foremost expert on golden cores might have left something behind that can help. His journey takes him to every major sect, requires dealing with his estranged brother, the legacy of Jin corruption, the damage that the destruction of the Wen caused, and of course Nie Huaisang's decade of scheming, only to find that there might just be a better option to save Lan Xichen than some lost books. That better option is not without cost, however.

Anger, resentment, fury, so much fury raged within him as his tears fell onto the pillow below him, creating two large wet spots.
He felt Lan Xichen’s hand slowly raking through his hair, speaking soft sounds as if trying to console a small child.
It felt sickening, condescending.
Lan Wangji didn’t know how the sects could’ve done it, how they could have entered into the Burial Mounds and done what they did when they saw the inhabitants. When the only army they saw were the elderly and women, likely wielding gardening supplies as weapons.
It wasn’t even a fair fight.

After yet another meeting at the Golden Tower, where Jin Guangshan seems unable to breathe just by mentioning Wei Wuxian and repeats like a broken record that he wants both him and the Yin Tiger Seal, the situation explodes. Not content with that, he also demands that the few surviving Wen be handed over to the Jin “for judgment.”
Jiang Cheng has already tried to talk to Wei Wuxian. He came back more frustrated than ever, with zero results and a massive headache. So, for “one last diplomatic attempt,” Jin Guangshan decides to send Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue. Obviously not because he trusts them, or because he believes in peace at all: he just hopes that Wei Wuxian will make a mistake, even a tiny bit, so as to have the perfect pretext for an attack.
Lan Xichen leaves full of optimism, Nie Mingjue with a headache. At the Funeral Mountains they find no armies or living corpses, but elder Wen men tending the fields. The only thing they don't find... is Wei Wuxian. Instead, they discover that he is in Yiling every day, at the inn he opened with the few surviving Wen. And perhaps, between steaming soup and unexpected smiles, something could warm them much more than their stomachs.
