He loves the way she’s able to love so fiercely, so passionately, and prove that all the things she loves are worthy of her big smile and full heart. Karuta. Her friends. Her supporters. Arata.

Another dead card, fine, but this one changed the game. Arata's favorite, wata no hara, was now a one-syllable card, and to make things worse, it was on Arata's side. It would be nearly impossible to take now, and if he looked up to see the player's gleam in Arata's eyes, it would become completely impossible. Right now, here, on the main stage at Omi Jingu, Taichi could only have eyes for the cards on the board.

Chihaya didn't notice when her legs lengthened by a few centimeters. She hadn't taken note when the scrapes on her knees smoothed out or the first time her hair was long enough to brush against her shoulders. If all happened so minutely, so gradually, so steadily, that she simply hadn't conceptualized the changes taking place.
Chihaya didn't notice her growth while it was happening; only later, when it was done–and she had to readjust her karuta form, her technique, to compensate–did she fully realize that it had happened at all.
Falling in love with Arata was a lot like that.

It's normally on his walk home from campus that his mind begins to wander, and almost always inevitably turns to her.
They're friends now, but still not quite as close as they once were. He doesn't think they'll ever be that close again. The lingering sting of her quiet rejection still haunts him, and it's only when he's absorbed in his schoolwork that he can blissfully escape the constant reminder in the back of his mind saying "she doesn't love you, time to move on."
Besides, Arata's in Tokyo now, filling the empty space Taichi left behind. She'll be fine without him.—
