Lark had been gripping the edge of his chair tighter and tighter through Sandis's speech, when suddenly there was a small crack. He looked down in numb surprise. He had broken the cheap plastic chair. His mind was somewhere else, though, back in the dark hospital room with one word resonating in his mind. WrenWrenWrenWrenWren--
"I can see those gears turning in your head", Sandis murmured. "As unwilling as you are to acknowledge it, I know quite a bit about you. I know you spend every second of every day pushing back fear, pushing back the memories of your past. I know you hate that fear is the only thing that keeps you going anymore".
"There are other things", Lark said hoarsely, desperately.
"Maybe. But not for you". Sandis tugged off one of their gloves and offered him a smooth, unmarred hand to shake. "Do we have a deal?"
Or: The Realm is getting bigger, Lark and Wren are drifting away, and neither of them are sure that they're fighting for the right side.

Hayden is Wren's favorite offspring/prostitute, so she's treated particularly poorly by Wren. However, Hayden is in a relationship with a human named Casey that she tried to keep secret from Wren, but ultimately fails. Wren has Casey kidnapped and turned to get back at Hayden for going behind their back and having a relationship outside of work.
