This was partially inspired by an earlier prompt, and partially inspired by certain cultures' practices (the accuracy of this isn't entirely certain, but I digress).
For Dwarves, execution is the worst possible punishment. Even overcome with his Gold Sickness, Thorin could not bring himself to do such a thing to Bilbo.
What none of them knew however, is that banishment is the worst possible punishment for Hobbits. And "banishment" to Hobbits isn't just making someone leave. They leave because its so much worse to stay. Because for Hobbits, if you are banished, everyone in the community, your family, anyone who ever had ties to you will ignore you. They will not look at you, talk to you, or acknowledge you in any way. Leaving isn't necessary, but if everyone is acting as if you are literally dead to them, why stay?
Bilbo has never really connected to anyone besides his parents before he met the dwarves. They were the closest thing to a family he had. So when he is banished, he is absolutely devastated.
And completely breaks down when Thorin finally comes to his senses post-BotFA and chases after him in a panic. Because Thorin is looking at him.
