Steve smacks his lips and swallows hard, but the odd metallic taste doesn’t leave his mouth. Dustin huffs at his lack of response and smacks the flat of his palm against the side of the car. Usually, Steve would reprimand him for that, tell the kid something about the paint job, or dents, but Dustin storms out of Steve’s sight before he can catch up to the situation. Steve’s slumped over the steering wheel, letting it press into the side of his face and his ribs, a radiating ache, but he knows the moment he moves, the pain will flare into something sharp and unbearable.

It stopped the way Ilya’s scent overwhelmed him, making staying in control easier. His hand was still firmly clasped over his mouth, and he moved the hand in a way that Ilya could tell he was biting it, chin poking out more than before. Either way, pride clawed its way out with how Ilya’s comment pissed him off. He pulled his blood coated fangs from his hand.
“Fuck you, I’m not sick.” Anger flared in his chest, and he was regretting the breath he’d sucked in, in order to speak. He was starting to feel lightheaded, faint from exhaustion due to lack of proper nutrition. Usually when he felt like this he’d do some pest control.
The NHL All-Star game. Shane Hollander waited in front of 1221 in a daze, unable to focus with the sound of Ilya's heartbeat behind the door. When Ilya offers him his blood for the first time, noticing Shane's hunger, he reluctantly agrees that a bite wouldn't be too bad.
