Summary
Mike feels like his heart’s racing a mile a minute. Like he just jumped off a building and is waiting for the fall, the inevitable conclusion of it all. For Will to scream and push him away for crossing some arbitrary line they drew in the sand some number of years ago.
But he doesn’t. He never lands. Will doesn’t say a thing.
In the aftermath of everything that happened at the MAC-Z, Mike tries to make sense of where he and Will stand—whenever he gets a chance to in the midst of the world's potentially impending doom.

Summary
“So, now that I’ve lured you out of your cave,” Mike starts, and quickly adds as an aside, “And guided you into a casual state of mind with the promise of milkshakes,” before leaning forward to properly meet his eyes, “You wanna tell me what’s wrong?”
Will knew that question was coming, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been dreading it. Putting words to what he’s been going through lately is difficult, at least if he wants to be taken seriously. His earlier attempt had crashed and burned, which is what landed him here in the first place. He needs to be strategic, methodical, cut and dry in his approach.
“I don’t know what good talking about it will do, but sure,” he shrugs, trying to play this out calmly, resting his chin in his hands as he stares right back at his best friend, “I’m losing my mind.”
It’s the late 90’s and Will Byers is trying to paint. He's at least making progress on the freelance work, but on his personal art far less so. It doesn’t help that forces outside of his—or anyone’s—control have something else in store.

“You know, of all people I get it,” she says quietly and crosses her arms, “Jonathan’s gone too.”
“Yeah, well,” he starts, staring up at his ceiling, “Both El and Will left, so I get to be twice as miserable.”
At the end of Stranger Things 3, Mike says he’s got the okay to visit for Thanksgiving. Stranger Things 4 makes it seem pretty clear that didn’t happen.

Summary
Sometimes, even this close, always in the same space, Mike feels like there’s a want inside him that aches so much, like Will is somehow going to drift away if he doesn’t reach out and latch onto him. He’s clingy, he’s gross, and the world has already ended and somehow pieced itself back together.
Maybe Mike deserves to be clingy and gross and a little, a lot, in love.

Or, Mike and Will have their first kiss during the end of the world. Kissing a second time, when everything is finally back to normal, takes a lot more courage.

“That wasn’t on you,” Will says. “You did everything you could. Our crew is the ones who screwed up. If we’d kept Derek blindfolded better, then maybe—”
“Not on you either,” Mike interrupts. “You were watching us beat the shit out of that demo.”
“Hurt like hell,” Will admits with a snort, glancing at Mike. He expects a laugh in return, at the very least, even after his embarrassing moment of flirtation earlier. He doesn’t expect the smile to slide right off Mike’s face and shift into something horrified.
“You felt that?” he asks, his face pale even under the yellow light of the flashlights.Or: Will feels the demogorgon during the Turnbow trap. Mike is horrified by this.

Summary
Lucas reached for Max's hand, so Mike grabbed onto El's. Lucas called Max beautiful, so Mike dutifully repeated it. Lucas took Max on dates to the movies, so Mike… look, it wasn't his fault that Dustin was at camp, and El couldn't go places with a lot of people, and so he ended up sitting next to Will in the dark theatre.
It wasn't a big deal. In fact, it was so totally not a big deal, that Mike made up a list of rules to keep it that way.
Or- I realised that Halloween was only a few days before s5 v1, and thought it would be cute if that's when mwtfdydg happened

Summary
“It was the hottest thing I think I've ever seen,” Mike says, and when Will whips his head over, he’s nodding sagely. Like this is extremely important information.
“What,” Will chokes.
For a moment, Mike just keeps nodding. Lucas calls Almost ready! over the din of panic and Will tries to steady his breathing. He doesn’t know how he’d ended up being the one they trust with the stitches, but he gets their reasoning. Steady artists hands, they’d all said, even Mike, wincing while draining half the bottle. Then: I trust you.
“It was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen,” Mike repeats, like Will simply hadn’t heard him. “When you, like,” Mike dramatically wipes his nose with his good arm, eyes flashing dark. He misses, a little, and Will grabs his hand to bring it gently back down, but he gets the picture.
OR
Mike is severely injured in the Upside Down. He admits some things to Will, drunk out of his mind. They talk about it.
