Ben's first royal proclamation was to give the children of the Isle of the Lost, a prison for the enemies and villains of Auradon, a new chance. Each person in the group hides how they feel about the plan. They don’t want to do this. They don’t want the wand to destroy what good they found in Auradon. The group was told before they left for Auradon that they had to steal the wand to let the villains be free and let them win. At first, they thought that too- at first, they thought that's what all their hearts desired. But since arriving in Auradon, meeting new friends, and having new experiences, they realized they were wrong.

In March, a little over four years after knowing Mal, High King Benjamin is forced by the royal council to send his Lady of the Court to the Isle of the Lost after she is accused of high treason and murder. By April, King Benjamin is still refusing to believe Mal is guilty; he finds evidence that his childhood friends framed her. By June, High King Benjamin is practically begging them to allow him to bring in the Auradon knights to find Mal, after failing to right this wrong by himself.
