Summary
Cordelia Edevane has always been an enigma to the other ghosts who haunted Button House, seeming to prefer the company of the living instead of the lingering spirits gathered over many centuries. So when Heather Button, the last inheritor of Button House, finally passes away due to old age, Cordelia is the only ghost who worries over the rundown house's fate while the rest bask in their new freedom.
Months later, the arrival of new homeowners Mike and Alison Cooper rid Cordelia of her previous worries. However, her housemates don't take too kindly to the married couple's plans to renovate Button House into a hotel, resulting in an unsuccessful haunting that ends with a near-death experience for Alison and her gaining the ability to perceive and converse with the dead. The ghosts, led by the Captain, plot to use Alison's new abilities to make the Coopers leave for good. But to their surprise, Cordelia is prepared to keep them from leaving, even if it means foiling the mischief of her fellow ghosts.
Meanwhile, an at-her-wits-end Alison may have found an unlikely ally keeping her sanity in check; Cordelia might be the only ghost of Button House she can just about tolerate.

A few new folks were to be shuffled through today, picked up from the train station and given temporary documents until the forgeries department could process them all. A few of them would be staying on at Higham House, but as he understood it, most would be finding lodgings elsewhere in the area. Still, there was lots to do, much to prepare.
James appointed himself supervisor, making sure everything ran in a timely and efficient manner so they’d be ready when their temporary guests arrived. Humphrey was two minutes late to get to the car, which meant he would be late to pick them up. He seemed unbothered by this when the Captain pointed it out.
And then they flocked in, a load of werewolves and vampires and someone that smelled like neither, but was most certainly not human. He helped to check them in, so to speak, keeping count and marking off their names on the ‘expected’ list. It was all going very smoothly, until his eyes caught on a ghost from his past.
“Captain?”
“Havers,” the whisper fell from his lips, unbidden.

None of the other Button House residents had picked up on their relationship, as far as he could tell. Granted, they’d only been together a month, but-- “Good god,” swore the Captain, flinching away from the small figure that was suddenly standing by his left elbow. “Jemima? What-? How-? What are you doing here?”
The girl continued to stare at him silently, but she did reach into her bag and retrieve a letter, which she thrust into the Captain’s hands.
“She told you to leave? To find me?”
Jemima nodded. “Plan C,” she said solemnly.
Of course Bridget had multiple plans for how to help Jemima flee the country. “She didn’t come with you? Is your mother in some kind of trouble?” the Captain asked, now very concerned. What had Bridget gotten herself involved in now?
Jemima hesitated, and then reached back into her bag to carefully pull out a packing envelope, which she held close to her chest before gingerly opening it and proffering the contents for the Captain to see.
Inside was just a lot of fine gray powder. The Captain opened his mouth to ask another question, before realization hit him. “Oh,” he said. “Oh dear.”Series
