FOR PEOPLE UNFAMILIAR WITH PATHOLOGIC:
“Haruspex” Artemy Burakh (aka Tyoma) A surgeon raised to practice cultural medicine in the Eurasian Steppe. He studied professional medicine at the Capital’s university for many years, returning to his homeland just in time to be accused of his father’s murder.
“Bachelor” Daniil Dankovsky (aka Danko) A renowned Capital doctor researching how to conquer death. He arrives in the Town-on-Gorkhon to find the local doctor murdered and a sudden plague.PART 1: (POV D)(Meta) After resetting saves and failing to save his childhood friend, Artemy has a grief-stricken breakdown in Daniil’s room. || Death won't have him. The Bachelor has decided. There are times when, to stop death, one needs only to see that someone cares.
PART 2: (POV A) Artemy tries to gift Daniil with a handmade charm of protection. || It's important to him that Daniil understands. Danko will be alone, sooner or later: a stranger in a place where strangers are to blame for everything. He won't let it happen. "You need to be connected," the right words are finally at his tongue. "That’s what I’m offering you: connection. A Line, if you will."
PART 3: (POV D) Daniil has sex with Artemy atop a sacrificial table in Isidor’s workshop. || Artemy traces his finger over Daniil's sternum. The sigil of the Steppe blooms in red on his skin and Daniil feels marked. "We're of the same blood now, you and I." Looking right in Artemy’s eyes, Daniil pulls Artemy's hand closer. F[…] Isidor, he thinks. F[…] the Steppe, and f[…] the Town. He is not yours. He is mine, mine, mine.
PART 4 - FAVORITE: (POV A) Artemy takes Daniil out herb-gathering to distract him from the stress. Artemy tries to tell Daniil about his spiritual connection to the steppe, worrying his efforts aren’t helping at all. In the end, Daniil does his best to listen and offers ideological and cultural compromises to reconcile Artemy’s experiences as being real—despite his own worldview—and accept Artemy’s culture and spirituality. Daniil offers a date to the Capital’s botanical gardens where he can show off the city he loves and give Artemy a chance to listen to plants he would otherwise have never heard. (There’s very realistic compromises here, working to fit each other into their worldviews without invalidating the other’s experiences and kjdfknvslkdfv) || Daniil smiles. "You are a wonder, my friend." It catches Artemy off guard and his words elude him at once. (He cannot find himself in any language. He's of the Steppe, but not. Of the Town, but not. Of the Capital, but not, too much for everyone, and he belongs nowhere.) "You are beautiful", Artemy whispers, because it feels right. Artemy takes Danko's chin, gently he takes his time to notice the sharp features, the little imperfections. "You are mine."
PART 5: (POV D) Artemy is attacked and Daniil shoots a man. Artemy slashes the dying man’s throat and cuts out his infected heart (Pathologic; Day 5). || "Wouldn't it be strange, to find your own heart inside someone else's chest?" Tyoma doesn't answer. When he does, it's a whisper: "Perhaps I already have."
PART 6: (POV A) Artemy cares for Daniil, who is sick from overwork and frustration. || Suddenly—Artemy understands how it is like: to work yourself because it's the only thing you are good for. Because no one depends on you, so no one would notice that you are gone. Because everyone counts on you, and without you, it will all fall apart. "I won't leave you, Daniil," he says, and it is true.
PART 7: (POV A)(Post-) Artemy dances with Daniil to a vinyl, feeling alive and happy. || The music sinks its hook under Artemy's skin. He feels alive. The word throws Artemy off rhythm and into a mess of tangled limbs. "Sorry," he laughs into Daniil's hair. Both Daniil's hands wrap around Artemy's back and he laughs too.
PART 8: (POV D)(Post-) Artemy and Daniil worship each other’s bodies. || He reaches for the red bone charm, lying on the nightstand, and hangs it on his neck. With it against his sternum, he feels complete. Just where he should be.
PART 9: (POV D) Daniil and Artemy get into a screaming match over Artemy’s infection (Pathologic 2; Day 6). They discuss utilitarianist responsibility (Daniil) vs compassionate self (Artemy). Daniil has a panic attack and Artemy apologizes. || "You are one of three people in this whole town fighting this. It's not a privilege, Burakh, it's a duty. Each of them is unique in their humanity. And yet - without them, the town will survive, crippled, but still. Without us there is no chance for them, do you understand? They are helpless. They will all die."

If Tomas thinks about it, it's not so difficult to suppose that with the scant handful of lovers he's known, he's still more experienced than Marcus. Marcus who was raised in the Church, who switches dizzyingly fast from closed-off and taciturn to baring his soul with an almost unnerving intimacy, who can be so effortlessly affectionate with the people whose lives he touches yet is so insistent that an exorcist must go without things like home and family and love.
And once Tomas has had that realization, it feels like something precious and fragile has been unexpectedly placed in front of him. Not because of any naive association of virginity with purity, but because if he's right, it means that Marcus has either never wanted or never trusted anyone enough to take that step.
