He didn’t want some big dramatic fight between them. So rather than asking Shane the question that had been swimming around in his mind for months, he took the two things he had always known to be true, that deep down he never was and never would be good enough for legendary hockey player Shane Hollander despite the other man's denial; and that he truly was an asshole, and did what he had always done when things got hard.
"I can not deal with you anymore, Hollander," he spat. "We all have problems! I can not sit around stupid fucking Ottawa trying to fix yours anymore!"
OR: Ilya doesn’t actually ask Shane if he would choose between him and hockey. Heartbreak ensues.

Ilya stops his fussing to smile at Shane. They’ve been living together for two months now, but he still melts every time Shane says words like ‘together’ and ‘we’ and ‘us.’ It makes Shane want to throw him down on the table and eat him alive.
“Nothing is wrong with it. I love it, because we picked it out together.”
“Okay… so what’s the deal with finding the table runner my mom got us?”
“That one matches the flowers I bought, and the new blankets on the couch. We cannot have these people thinking we live like divorced fathers.”
“Ilya, no one would ever think that. We’re one of the only couples without a toy pile stashed in the corner of the living room. And we keep this house in top shape, because you know I’ll lose my shit if we don’t.”
“I know that, but they don’t know that! What other conclusion will they come to if our dining room does not match the flow of the rest of the downstairs?”

Shane made it back to the living room right as he clicked on Ilya’s contact, placing the phone against his ear and practically collapsing back onto the couch as the line rang.
“Come on, come on, pick up, pick up, pick up,” he begged under his breath.
Hayden watched him with silent concern.
There was a beep over the phone, “Hi, this is Ilya; I will never listen to your voicemail.”
Shane hung up and checked the time. It was barely early evening in Moscow; Ilya should’ve answered.
He hit the call button again. This time, the beep was practically immediate.
“Hi, this is Ilya-”
He called again.
“Hi, this is-”
Shane hung up and buried his head in his hands. This couldn’t be happening.

Ilya is in Russia, instead of in bed next to Shane, when the FanMail video makes it to Twitter. The days that follow are filled with waiting, fear, running, and hope as both of them fight different battles, but with the same goal in mind: to be able to keep loving each other for years to come.

But as their heat and rut approaches, something they have never shared before, Shane wonders if it might be time to talk about the next part of their relationship. But when Shane gets an answer he's not expecting, he starts going down a rabbit hole to confirm that this is actually what he wants.

Shane smoothes his hands along Ilya’s calves, rests his fingertips on Ilya’s ankles. “Fuck Wayne Gretzky,” he says. He looks like he can’t believe what he’s saying. Ilya wonders, distantly, if he can get it on tape to play back to himself when things feel particularly bleak. “We can live in exile together. I don’t care. You’re my, my best, my second best hockey player forever too.”
