A bolt of what looks like black lightning slams into the dirt, scorching the area where they had just been standing.
Not the warmest of greetings, but not surprising either.
Gem bares her teeth, raising her wings and looking up towards the house. Pearl is perched on the railing, her sword leveled at a shadowy figure standing in front of the door. The whole world seems to freeze as the shadow’s head tilts. It lifts its hand slowly, pointing a finger at Pearl, and then draws it diagonally across its body. A rip appears and splits across his body. Dark, voidic tentacles erupt from the rip, grab hold of Pearl and yank her in. The rip closes behind her.
“Pearl!” Gem screams.
Or, the man of the forest did not want to be found.

Cleo turns into a bat to prevent herself being discovered, this change results in Avid hurting her. Luckily Pearl is there to get Cleo out of the situation.

"Fire was the only thing that calmed Cleo down without fail. Every now and then, they got this strange urge to set something on fire - no matter what and why. Usually, they kept the urge buried, hidden from view, until it consumed her, and became the only thing she could think about. Setting up a small campfire, or burning a few pieces of paper helped temporarily, not for long. It was more akin to having a quick snack in a time of starvation. There was something so soothing in the way the flames danced with each other, how they combined and divided in a seemingly endless cycle. The warmth they gave off was calming, reminiscent of something Cleo could call home. Whenever she thought too much about her past, this was all they could really remember - the thin, hot, orange ribbons of fire surrounding her. She feared them at some point, but not anymore. This time, she was in control."
