I haven't read the John Winchester journal, so this is not accurate to it.
Dean had a rough few months on the road; his dad would deal with a creature, then teach him how to kill the creature, like a morning routine. Dean feared he would never get the smell of rotting, burning, or blood out of his nose. He got used to it, though, people would give him dirty looks in the corner stores when he would go in; he assumed it was from the smell, but was it? Was it because they saw past the face that he put on? Could they see the blood on his hands? On his soul? His mom had always told him that only the damned got punished, but why was he? Maybe he was damned from the start. His dad would tell him that he was a disappointment more than he called him by his name; maybe that was the issue with him, he wasn’t trying hard enough. His mom would tell him about angels and god, but all he knew was demons and death. Now she was gone; did she not pray enough? Dean prayed for himself and Sammy, but not his mom. Was that why she was dead and not him?
In short, a perspective on being raised the way Dean Winchester was.

This time, he'd save everyone he'd failed or die trying.
