Not “attended.” She infiltrated it. The lottery is a private event, and lurking—actually lurking overnight in the post office, so she could snoop on good honest townsfolk—I call it disgusting.
There was an international outcry after the ProPublica report was published.
Because people had an extremely biased and incomplete view of what happened, because if you’re hiding inside a mailbag you’re not going to get a full picture.

It’s as Shen Qingqiu crushes the last little fluttering Iridescent Gem Beetle that the mother decides to introduce herself by burrowing up out of the earth like a cicada the size of an elephant. He just barely has time to resign himself to an even more exhausting fight than the last one - with no rest point in between to chug stamina potions or anything! Honestly, what poor game design! - when the stranger appears.
He charges into the scene out of nowhere like an absolute bullshit deus ex machina, all dark, flowing hair and robes, whirling around to stab at the Mother Beetle with a gleaming white sword, making it screech and rear back in pain. Seriously, Shen Qingqiu feels like he’s suddenly trapped in a video game cutscene introducing the new companion! Where’s the background music and camera close up? Who is this guy?

Shen Qingqiu happens to meet a mysterious stranger on the road, but he surely isn't important or relevant to the plot in the slightest.

“Oh, yes, it’s very good,” Shen Qingqiu lies. How could he possibly have the heart to tell this well intentioned young man that, even though the meal he’d made had smelled very appetizing just a few moments ago, now that he’s had some it actually tastes… quite bland? “This master is just realizing that he really isn’t very hungry. Just this much was enough, thank you.”
