Midoriya Izuku was born quirkless, without any power to call upon in the chase for his dream of becoming a hero. More than anything else, that is what hurt the child the most, at the time.
One day, when the boy was nine years old - just old enough to finally have a fuller grasp on his life, but still young enough to blindly trust and hope, despite all logic and reason - he forgot his umbrella at home, despondently standing in his school's entrance door as the rain poured down from the clouds above.
Yet, before he could decide if he wanted to be soaked through with rainwater or wait for his mom, a kindly old man approached him, bearing an umbrella to shelter him under.
They walked to Izuku's home together, talking about all the kinds of things that excited the boy. And, eventually, a question was asked;
'Do you have a quirk?'
'... No,' the boy answered, excitement shattered.
'Well,' the old man continued, 'do you want one? Or something like it.'
The boy does not remember the exact form his answer took, and he does not remember the kind old man anymore.
He only knows the catastrophic results his answer had for his life.

Many human citizens were kidnapped and there existence and records removed by the public unfortunately many subjects failed and were removed Hide was one of the unfortunate ones who got kidnapped as well but he was the only subject to succeed as a artificial ghoul who was made to kill and hunt other Ghouls.
