Through the change they figure out that maybe this is how it was supposed to be all along.

Marinette's voice comes out in broken sobs. Her sobs reach wrenching notes. Adrien manages a weak smile, raising his hand slowly... as if to touch her face. "Don't cry Mari, please be strong! Finish this for me. For us!" Adrien's eyes slowly close.
"Adri... please.. you can do it. Stay alive for me, you hear me!" His body soon grows limp. "No, nonono this can't be happening. You are not dying on me Adrien! You are not dying on me!! Can you hear me!! ADRIEN!!!"

At some point, the weight, the meaning, of the earrings shifted. They no longer meant freedom and fun as she soared through the city of lights with the wind between her hair. Hell, they didn't even hold the weight that once was a promise to her former mentor and the people of Paris. No. Now these earrings held a weight so heavy that it pressed on every fiber of Marinette's being. She can tell there's something wrong with him, but doesn't want to pry, as much as she wants to. So for now, the only thing she can do is be there for him as a friend, even if she wants more than that.
★ Adrien is done trying to confess to Ladybug. She's been excessively overwhelmed and stressed due to her superhero duties. Telling her how he felt would only add more to her plate; he could tell she didn't like him back. It's hard for him too, even if she couldn't see it. So for now, the only thing he could do is be there for her as a partner, even is he wants more than that.
★ But, what if they both found a way to avoid the misery of heartbreak, if only for a little? What if Chat Noir paid a visit to Marinette's house at night, just for old times sake? "Spots on!" she said quickly, but nothing happened. The habit that usually saved her in dangerous situations, like these, was of no help as she left her earrings at home. After the initial panic was quickly replaced by a sense of freedom, of liberation, she closed her eyes, relaxing her muscles preparing for the impact. But the impact never came, or at least the one with the river, as she felt two arms gently wrapping under her back and legs, taking her in a warm embrace. She didn't realize what the soft pillow under cheek was, but right then it didn't matter. Maybe her fall was the cause of this hallucination, maybe her brain tricked her into feeling like she was receiving a final hug and she was grateful for it.
! If you're worried that this story might trigger you let me first clarify this, she fell, she didn't jump.
