Arriving at Downton brought with it feelings Thomas hadn’t expected. He’d anticipated a roiling of nerves in his gut at returning to the place he’d called home for so long. He anticipated a sense of pride to be the one showing Guy and Noël into the place – even if they insisted on following him in through the kitchens.
But he hadn’t anticipated the ghosts of his own loneliness to follow him through the door as well. For all that had happened here, he did not relish the squirm of his gut at all the pain and rejection and misunderstanding he’d endured over the years.
OR: Thomas, Guy, and Noël are invited to a dinner at Downton, and Guy suggests going a few days early to sightsee. Along the way, Thomas revisits his past in more ways than one. The missing moments of Thomas’ story in the third movie that deserve to be given a spotlight.

That’s Thomas Barrow’s title nowadays – underbutler to the household, personal aide to the Duke, and Baba to the children. They figure out where he lives, at the very end of the servants’ corridor, and they’re rather shocked and saddened to learn he doesn’t keep any personal belongings in this very bare and unheated room. So they decide to cheer him up.
