One day then, an elderly woman had taken pity on her, and given her a necklace the woman swore was magic. It was a simple, subtle drop necklace that Himiko wore under her shirt, with a gemstone inlaid the size of a pinhead. Each day, the gem would change, and the elderly woman swore that this meant the nature of the magic protecting Himiko also changed.
Himiko wasn't sure she believed any of that, but still, touched by the kindness of that elderly woman, she never took the necklace off.
