Just when he almost fell asleep, he thought he heard a sound. Almost like a chiming of a clock.
He felt his body freeze with fear and goosebumps appeared on his arms and the back of his neck.
There was another noise. A voice. Probably a man's. Raspy and deep. It was calling his name.
“Michael, so finally we meet.”(now complete: chapter 1 - angst. chapter 2 - fluff)

There were so many thoughts running through Mike’s head, he knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep any time soon. He thought back over the last year. A year away from his best friend and his - well, he didn’t actually know if El still wanted to be anything with him. Time apart made him realize that he didn’t really know who he was anymore without the threat of a monster around every corner.
Will was upset that Mike didn’t call or write during the year they were apart, but the truth was that Mike didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to explain the sense of longing that he felt for wanting his best friend to be at his side. He didn’t know how to say that he missed him more than El, who was supposed to be the love of his life.
Or, a story in three parts on how Mike Wheeler has always loved Will Byers, it just took a while to get there.

“Hopefully they mentioned how incredible it looks and that they’re all jealous they can’t pull off bangs as well as I can.” Eddie throws his head around in a rocker stance, playing a little air guitar for emphasis. Will is staring at him unimpressed. “Well, Will the Wise, I've heard all about you.”

Everything’s currently wrong in Mike’s life. Hawkins is being consumed by the Upside Down, his DM and mentor is dead, his friend is in a coma, his now ex-girlfriend is still mostly ignoring him, he has feelings that he can’t quite parse outside of angry outbursts, and now there’s something up with his best friend.
Or: maybe those last two things had always been the case and Michael Wheeler was just wildly good at being oblivious and ignoring things that seem too hard to handle—until he has no way out but through.
