As property, the King of Brooklyn had the right to offer the treasure that was his only child, an insolent boy in the King's mind, to the invading conqueror Barnes as a plea for mercy. Barnes's military outnumbered Joseph's 10-1. Steve was 15, a few months from 16, and even Barnes admitted Joseph was slime for using his child as tribute.
That did not stop Barnes from actually taking Steve. Barnes, as he later admitted, was not a good man, either.
