This is the second book in the "Far From Home" Trilogy
Taking place at the beginning of season six of Deep Space Nine, we are once again presented with an alternative course of events. During the final hours of the Cardassian-Dominion occupation of Deep Space 9, Jake, Rom, and Leeta are re-captured and taken off the station as the station is in the process of being reclaimed by Captain Sisko. After following the clues, is discovered that the trio has been dump on the dreaded planetoid Rura Penthe (a presumably abandoned dilithium mining penal colony founded by the Klingon Empire more than sixty years prior during Kirk's time.) After additional information comes to light that survivors of the Cardassian Fleet led by Enabran Tain against the Dominion might be on Rura Penthe as well Garak hatches a plan to seek out the possible last remaining traces of the old Obsidian Order on Rura Penthe. The plan just so happens to also include rescuing Jake, Rom, and Leeta as well as Julian who has disappeared and is presumed to be trapped somewhere on the planetoid as well. In order to make things work, Garak decides to recruit a particular alien Doctor presently away on Vulcan.
