Mathias is chief of the tribal police force of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He inherited his post when Malachi Strand was convicted of corruption and imprisoned. Mathias has fired Malachi's people, and replaced them with his own, but the problems that existed before have not gone away.
He has no problem off the reservation because he has no authority there, that is the responsibility of Walt Longmire, the county sheriff. Due to fiscal limitations of the BIA his powers are severely limited and allow him only to investigate misdemeanors on the reservation. He wants to do whatever he can to help his people, but his hands are tied and finds himself frustrated by his situation.
Someone new has come to Durant, someone who has grabbed Mathias' interest. An ex-FBI agent named Alia has some to town. Mathias has fallen for her, hard; not just for her beauty, but for her compassion and her understanding of the plight of the Cheyenne. He feels she's way beyond him, a doctor, and a veteran of the Palestinian refugee camps, but why does he get the feeling she might feel the same?

Meticulous and thorough with that rare insight a pathologist would find vital, she is often asked to assist on official police enquiries (and occasionally on less than official ones). Molly likes cats, praline, coffee before noon and bright, translucent eyes. She enjoys running at the weekend and shops at Waitrose when she's feeling flush and Tesco when she's not. Molly is a well rounded individual who holds doors open for old people and drops coins into busker's baskets (even when they are awful). She has also always been able hear and converse with dead people whether she likes it or not, but no-one else knows about that last thing.
