Before either kid can get too wrapped up in their fear, Vash says, “Do you want to know how to do a trick with that?” pointing at the lighter.
The kids blink at him, and then the silver haired one says, in the worst whisper Vash has ever heard, “Nico… I kinda do…”
“He’s lying to us, Livio,” the black haired boy–Nico?–hisses back. “He’s probably gonna go tell Miss Melanie we were smoking.”
“I’m not!” Vash says, waving his hands with a smile he hopes is trustworthy enough for Nico’s standards. “I’ll teach you the trick and then be on my way, how about it?”
Vash meets Nicholas.
Then, years later, he meets Wolfwood again.-

But this one night before bed, as he can recall with perfect clarity, it was a story about a boy having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. A day when just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong, and it wasn’t really the boy’s fault at all, except maybe it was, but only sorta. At the time he had been quite sympathetic to the boy's plight, after all the day did sound quite terrible to a plant who was almost one year old himself, even if it did end with his mother tucking him in.
Now, at a ripe old hundred and fifty some years, he thinks that perhaps his day deserves to be the next edition of that book.

Sinking.
Air bubbling from his mouth, he had to resist the urge to gasp.
The red glow from his sister enveloped his features, as Vash sank deeper into the tank. He had to blink his eyes rapidly to get them used to the stinging chemicals, but he knew it wouldn’t take long for his body to adapt.
Already, he felt the sensation of small feathery filaments separating from his skin, and could see the blue glow from his markings reflecting on the glass around him.
Soon, he would breathe in the liquid as it was air.

“You’re handsome,” Vash blurts, stupidly pressing his hand into Wolfwood’s face in effort to push the hair off his forehead. It doesn’t really work. He freezes for a moment, and then laughs, “I didn’t mean to say that out loud.”

Vash needed Wolfwood to understand. Until now, Vash always left behind a trail of pain and death wherever he went. July was the worst of it, scarring Vash with a guilt unlike anything he’d ever felt. Even though he managed to stop Nai in his tracks, that came at the cost of the lives of thousands. That scar would live on in Vash’s mind longer than any physical marring of his body.
However, if he were to have a child… maybe it would ease that awful feeling in Vash, even if just a little. He could help create a new life. He could nurture it, raise it, and love it like Rem had done for him. If it hadn’t been for Rem showing him love, he wouldn’t know what else to live for. Vash wanted to pass that feeling on, to try and make up for the awful truth of how many had died because of Vash and his twin brother.
Who could be better to help him create and raise offspring of his own than Wolfwood himself?
