Will laughed as the tarp behind Jonathan fell again while taking photos while his mum picked up the phone. She frowned and Will could faintly hear Karen Wheeler’s frantic voice. Joyce lowered the phone to her shoulder and mouthed the words, “Mike has been missing since last night.”
The old cold feeling washed over Will again. No Mike probably stayed at Lucas’ house or something, right?

Will picks up the book, gently, like he’s afraid of bending the spine. “This is the second one.” Will’s eyes light up as he says it. “I didn’t know it was out already.”
“You-, you’ve read the first one?” Mike stutters out, still standing frozen by the dining table.
Will laughs softly. His eyes move from the book to Mike’s face. Mike feels exposed in a way he hasn’t in a long time. “Read it? I loved it, Mike. It’s one of my favorite books ever. I’ve read it, like, three times.”
Mike secretly publishes a story about courage, monsters, and a boy he loves. He panics when he realizes Will might recognize himself in the pages.

His voice gets louder, more aggressive as he speaks. It’s kind of a relief seeing him like this again, yet kind of scary. He’s waving his hands in the air like it will help me understand. I just sit there as shock and worry wash over my face.
He turns to face me, realizing my expression, “Fuck! I’m sorry, like I said the meds aren’t working and I just feel like I have all this pent up anger, the meds are supposed to help but they're just keeping the anger in and I feel like I'll explode if I get slightly pissed. So I’ve kind of taken like.. a vow of silence? I don’t even know anymore.” He explains.

But now, instead of being hunted by the Mind Flayer, Mike's own body is his biggest enemy. He gets diagnosed with cancer. But he's fine. He'll just deal with this on his own. His mom and Nancy are enough. He can deal with the whirlwind of doctors and needles and IVs and feelings as long as his friends are happy. As long as they don't realize that even after all they've been through, one of them is still dying.
But the upside-down isn't done yet. As Mike goes crazy over his feelings for Will, it strikes again. How is Mike going to survive this next attack, now by a human-turned monster named Vecna, when he is already fighting his own personal battle? But more importantly, how is Mike going to confront his feelings for Will in this chaos?
