Uncle Vernon turned to Harry, handing him the telephone. “Someone is asking for you,” he said, his voice tight with displeasure. Harry stared down dumbly at the phone in Vernon’s chubby hand, unable to speak. He had never received a phone call in his life. At some point, the television had turned off, and Petunia and Dudley were staring at the both of them, identically confused expressions on their faces.
Vernon grunted with impatience. “Are you deaf, boy? Take it!”Harry finally startled into action, turning off the stove and taking the wired white telephone in one fluid motion. Harry put it up to his ear, his stomach summersaulting, his tone breathless as if he had been running. “Hello?”
“Harry!”
He recognized her voice instantly. Clever, melodious, light from the summer vacations. It seemed to him, in that moment, the most beautiful sound he had ever heard in his life.
“Hermione,” he breathed.
